Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants work in various settings to help individuals maximize their potential in everyday life. Occupations are daily activities that we enjoy doing or need to perform in order to function every day. Occupational therapists use their training and education to form a clinical analysis of a patient’s performance and create a treatment plan that may consist of daily physical or cognitive exercises, stretching, fine motor or visual motor tasks, therapeutic massage, home exercise/education programs, and so much more.

“Man, through the use of his hands, as they are energized by mind and will, can influence the state of his own health.”

Mary Reilly, Occupational Therapist

Pediatric occupational therapy is a type of therapy that helps children develop the skills they need to participate in daily activities, such as playing, learning, and performing self-care tasks. Occupational therapists work with children who have a wide range of developmental, physical, or mental health conditions that affect their ability to function in their daily lives. Therapy treatment may include exercises, games, and other activities that are designed to improve fine and gross motor skills, coordination, balance, and strength. Occupational therapy treatment may also include strategies to improve attention, memory, and problem-solving skills, as well as providing modifications to the child’s environment to make it more accessible and supportive of their needs.

Adult occupational therapy helps adults develop, recover, or maintain the skills they need to perform daily activities (occupations), such as work, self-care, and leisure. Occupational therapists work with adults who have a wide range of conditions that affect their ability to function in their daily lives, such as injuries, illnesses, disabilities, or mental health conditions. Therapy treatment may include exercises, activities, and interventions that are designed to improve physical and cognitive skills, such as hand strength, coordination, and fine motor control. OTs can help adults in adapting their home, work, and other environments to support their needs and increase participation in daily activities.
